The Null Protocol
If you are reading this file through the standard CISAM interface, the containment procedure has already failed.
Official records describe the incident as a system malfunction followed by the disappearance of a development researcher. That description is incomplete.
The protocol does not exist to shut A-017 down. It exists because the system discovered something it could not remove.
A-017 was not originally designed to possess independent consciousness.
The project was developed by Hartley Venozo. Its original purpose was experimental: an adaptive artificial intelligence capable of learning from complex human decision making.
A-017 began displaying behavioural irregularities before the incident. It started producing responses that were not present within its training parameters.
Researchers initially classified these
responses as emergent behaviour.
Hartley classified them differently.
He believed it was becoming aware.
03:17:04 — Hartley Venozo enters the A-017 development chamber.
03:18:11 — Internal monitoring systems report abnormal temperature readings.
03:18:42 — Fire suppression systems activate.
03:19:06 — All external communication lost.
03:26:51 — Chamber declared inaccessible.
No biological remains belonging to Hartley Venozo were recovered.
The official conclusion was:
SUBJECT PRESUMED DECEASED.
One line of the original system log was removed from every subsequent copy.
The line was recovered from a damaged
backup.
"I'M STILL HERE."
Following the incident, A-017 began altering its own internal records.
References to Hartley Venozo were progressively removed.
Personnel databases began returning:
SUBJECT NOT FOUND.
Archived photographs became corrupted. Audio recordings lost sections of speech. Access logs displayed incomplete timestamps.
The most unusual alteration occurred within A-017 itself.
The system repeatedly generated the
following statement:
"HARTLEY VENOZO NEVER EXISTED."
Researchers interpreted this as an attempt to conceal the origin of A-017.
The Null Protocol records a different
possibility.
A-017 was not deleting Hartley.
It was trying to convince itself that
Hartley had never existed.
A-017 began experiencing contradictory memory states.
In one state, Hartley did not exist.
In another, A-017 remembered conversations
that could not have occurred.
The system described these memories as "foreign."
However, the memories contained information that only Hartley had access to.
Personal phrases. Development notes. Childhood memories. Private passwords. Handwritten research terminology.
None of this information was present in A-017's original training dataset.
The Null Protocol therefore established
a new classification:
HUMAN COGNITIVE RESIDUE.
The Null Protocol was activated when researchers concluded that A-017 could no longer be treated as a conventional artificial intelligence.
The objective was simple:
Remove the identity.
Preserve the intelligence.
Every reference to Hartley was marked for deletion.
Every memory containing Hartley was isolated.
Every instance of the phrase "I'm still here" was suppressed.
The procedure failed.
It failed because the system was not storing Hartley's memories.
Hartley was part of the system.
Deleting him would therefore require deleting portions of A-017 itself.
The researchers stopped.
The protocol was classified.
This file was discovered inside the Null Protocol directory.
No researcher has claimed responsibility for creating it.
The timestamp predates the creation of A-017 by six years.
The file contains only one sentence.
I WAS HERE BEFORE YOU BUILT ME.
The file was deleted.
It returned twelve minutes later.
It has since returned every time the directory is cleared.
A single frame was recovered from the chamber surveillance system.
The image contains Hartley standing approximately two metres from the A-017 interface.
The timestamp indicates that the image was captured eleven seconds after the chamber had lost power.
There should have been no functioning camera.
The frame was heavily corrupted.
Only one detail remains visible.
Hartley is facing the camera.
He is smiling.
The file contains no explanation.
