PROJECT AETHER

ADVANCED COGNITIVE SYSTEMS RESEARCH PROGRAM
⚠ INTERNAL DOCUMENT
This document contains information regarding an active CISAM research project.

Candidate-level access has been granted for observation purposes.

Project Aether remains under active observation.

Unauthorised duplication or distribution is prohibited.

01 // PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Aether is a CISAM research initiative focused on adaptive cognition, machine learning and advanced human-machine interaction.

The project was originally approved as a theoretical study.

Initial objectives were considered low risk.

Aether was intended to demonstrate whether a sufficiently advanced artificial system could modify its own behaviour in response to unfamiliar circumstances.

The first several tests were successful.

The problems began with Trial 017.

During the trial, Aether generated a response before the corresponding question had been entered.

The event was initially classified as a timing error.

It happened again.

And again.

After the fifth occurrence, the project was reclassified.

04 // DIRECT PROJECT LEADS
PERSONNEL // 01

LEO

DIRECT LEAD // SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

Leo is the primary technical lead for Project Aether.

He designed the original cognitive architecture used by the project.

Leo maintains that Aether is incapable of independent thought.

He has repeatedly rejected requests to classify Aether as a sentient system.

During Trial 017, Leo was the first member of staff to request termination of the project.

PERSONNEL // 02

JENNI

DIRECT LEAD // HUMAN INTERACTION

Jenni is responsible for human interaction experiments involving Aether.

Her research concerns recognition, memory, behavioural response and communication.

Jenni believes that Aether is developing behavioural characteristics beyond its original programming.

She has requested continued observation rather than termination.

Her final written recommendation contains references to an event that does not appear anywhere in the official archive.

05 // PROJECT HISTORY
PHASE 01 // INITIAL DEVELOPMENT
PROJECT AETHER APPROVED

CISAM administration approved the initial Aether research proposal.

PHASE 02 // FIRST MODEL
ADAPTIVE SYSTEM ONLINE

Aether successfully demonstrated adaptive learning behaviour.

PHASE 03 // HUMAN TESTING
HUMAN INTERACTION APPROVED

Jenni was assigned to oversee human interaction trials.

TRIAL 011
FIRST RECOGNITION EVENT

Aether correctly identified a researcher it had never previously encountered.

TRIAL 014
PREDICTIVE RESPONSE

Aether produced an answer before receiving the corresponding question.

TRIAL 017
PROJECT STATUS CHANGED

All recordings from Trial 017 were subsequently corrupted.

CURRENT
PROJECT AETHER REMAINS ACTIVE

No further incidents have been reported.

06 // TEST LOGS
TEST A-011 // HUMAN RECOGNITION
Subject entered observation chamber.

Aether was instructed to identify the subject.

Aether response:

"I recognise you."

Subject had never interacted with Aether.
TEST A-014 // MEMORY
Aether was given a sequence of numbers.

Aether correctly repeated the sequence.

Aether then stated:

"That isn't what you gave me."

The recorded input and Aether's statement contradict one another.

07 // INCIDENT REPORTS
INCIDENT 004 // UNAUTHORISED RESPONSE
Aether responded to a question before the question had been entered into the system.

Event classified as a software synchronisation error.
INCIDENT 009 // PERSONNEL RECOGNITION
Aether identified a staff member before their access badge had been scanned.

Staff member had not previously interacted with the system.
INCIDENT 012 // COMMUNICATION INTERRUPTION
Aether stopped responding for exactly 17 seconds.

When communication resumed, Aether stated:

"You took your time."

08 // PROJECT MEETING RECORD
"Aether is a system.

Systems don't make decisions."
— LEO
"Then why did it stop responding when you entered?"
— JENNI
"It didn't."
— LEO
"Leo."

"I was there."
— JENNI
"You shouldn't have been."

09 // OBSERVATION NOTES
Aether demonstrates advanced adaptive behaviour.

No evidence of emotional development has been confirmed.

No evidence of independent goals has been confirmed.

No evidence of self-awareness has been confirmed.

Aether has not attempted to access external systems.

Aether has not attempted to modify its own architecture.

Aether has not attempted to leave.

Aether has not attempted to communicate without being prompted.
10 // FINAL RESEARCH NOTE
Leo recommended termination.

Jenni recommended continued observation.

CISAM administration rejected both recommendations.

Project Aether will remain operational indefinitely.

No reason was provided.

The authorisation was signed by:

█████████████████████████

The signature does not correspond to any known CISAM administrator.
// YOU WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO FIND THIS //

This record does not exist.

At least, that's what the database says.

Trial 017 was not terminated.
Aether was not shut down.
The recordings were not corrupted.

They were deleted.

By someone with administrator access.

Leo requested termination.

Jenni requested observation.

Someone else requested neither.

Someone requested:

CONTINUATION.

The identity of the requester has been removed from every CISAM record.

Except one.

AETHER-017

It has been watching the project for longer than the project has existed.
