Understanding The Universe
Physics at CISAM is concerned with the
fundamental principles governing matter,
energy, space and time. Candidates are
encouraged to move beyond memorisation and
investigate the mathematical structures
underlying physical phenomena.
The discipline extends from classical
mechanics to quantum systems, astrophysics,
cosmology and the investigation of
fundamental forces.
Areas of Specialisation
The Structure & Evolution of the Universe
Candidates investigate the origin, structure and evolution of the universe, including the formation of galaxies, cosmic expansion, dark matter and dark energy.
Extreme Physical Systems
Study the physical processes governing stars, stellar remnants, black holes and other extreme astronomical environments.
Matter At Fundamental Scales
Investigate the behaviour of matter and energy at quantum scales. Candidates examine probability, wave functions, quantum states and the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics.
The Fundamental Interactions
Candidates investigate the interactions that govern the physical universe and examine attempts to construct unified descriptions of these forces.
Space, Time & Gravitation
Study the relationship between space, time, matter and gravity through special and general relativity.
Unifying Physical Descriptions
Explore theoretical frameworks attempting to reconcile quantum mechanics with gravity and develop deeper descriptions of the fundamental structure of reality.
Don't Just Accept The Model.
Students are expected to understand why a
physical model works, not simply memorise
its conclusions. Established theories are
examined through mathematical derivation,
observation, experimentation and critical
analysis.
At advanced levels, candidates may investigate
unresolved problems and construct their own
hypotheses, provided those hypotheses can be
subjected to rigorous testing.
